KS2 Curriculum Guide

At Victoria English School, our Key Stage 2 (KS2) children are independent learners with the skills and outlook to succeed in today’s ever changing world. Our KS2 students achieve well and we are proud of their success.

The National Curriculum of England and Wales provides students with an introduction to the essential knowledge and skills they need as they grow up. The focus on the core subjects of English, Mathematics and Science together with the wider scope of the whole curriculum, including the foundation subjects below provides each student in KS2 with a rich learning experience.

  • Art
  • Computing
  • French
  • Geography
  • History
  • Music
  • Physical Education
  • Swimming

We offer the full programme of Ministry of Education approved Arabic for both Arab and Non-Arab students. Islamic Studies is taught for all Muslim students and UAE Social Studies is introduced from Year 4.

The National Curriculum is just one element in the education offered at VES. There is time and space in the school day to move beyond the national curriculum specifications to ensure that our curriculum is adapted to suit the multi-cultural environment and technological world in which our students are growing up. Our curriculum is responsive to change yet still enables teachers to develop and extend student”s understanding of the world as part of the wider school curriculum. This includes learning beyond the classroom; taking learning into the local environment through the use of educational excursions.

KS2 ENGLISH

Spoken Language

In KS2 spoken language underpins the development of reading and writing.

Throughout KS2 children the National Curriculum encourages students to:

  • Listen and respond to adults and their peers
  • Ask questions to extend their understanding and knowledge
  • Build their vocabulary
  • Articulate and justify their ideas and opinions clearly
  • Express their feelings
  • Maintain attention and participate actively in conversations, discussions and debates
  • Speak audibly and fluently with an increasing command of standard English by Year 6
  • Consider the different viewpoints of others, and respond appropriately.

KS2 MATHS

“A high quality mathematics education provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically and a sense of excitement and curiosity about the subject. It is essential to everyday life”

(National Curriculum Review for Mathematics 2012)

Mathematics teaching at Key Stage 2 in Victoria English School enables each student to develop not only the numeracy skills and understanding required, but also an enthusiasm and fascination for mathematics itself and a solid foundation of skills for life in the future.

KS2 SCIENCE

Science in Victoria English School provides the foundations for understanding the world. Science has changed lives and is vital to the world around us. All students in Key Stage 2 are taught essential knowledge, methods and uses of science.

Through topics that build on experiences as the students grow older, they will develop a secure understanding of scientific concepts.

At Victoria English School we aim for children to be curious about the world around them and develop strategies for discovering and communicating scientific ideas and information.
